"Not by Faith but by Works"
This important passage explains why the OT sacrificial system failed most of the time. The Israelites were supposed to put faith in God and obey God by offering sacrifices. Offering their sacrifices were a sign of their faith.
Instead, they saw their sacrifices as "earning" forgiveness and lived in disobedience to God. They came to believe that if they fulfilled their sacrificial obligations then it covered up their disobedience. They forgot that toe Lord wanted obedience more than sacrifice.
We need to be careful that we never see our Christian "practices", whether ritual or good works, as earning our salvation. If we do, we distort our relationship with God and put ourselves at risk.
Follow God with all your heart.
